arolinum: the Association of the Alumni and Friends of Charles University

After four years of its existence, the Carolinum Association decided, at its General Assembly on 5 April 1995, that it should adopt new measures to broaden and diversify its activities. Those present agreed that it was essential to increase the numbers of the membership, and especially of younger members who have enough energy to push forward the Association's activities. For that reason, membership applications will this year be distributed to all new graduates of Charles University.

The General Assembly further decided to set up several new sections, which will develop the activities of the Association in particular areas. One of the sections, headed by Ing. J. Svoboda, the Deputy Minister of Culture, has been given the task of making the Association independent of the university's finances. Its main duties are obtaining sponsors and directing the financial aspects of the Association's activities.

Another section, which is intended to give the Association a more prominent place in the subconscious of the university public, is the "Lecture" Section (a better name does not occur to me at present). This section will organise lectures and colloquia on all manner of current topics. We also anticipate that they will arrange meetings between members of the university and leading figures from other walks of life, such as business, the courts and the legislature.

Because the Association already has a number of partner organisations abroad and we wish to expand upon these contacts, we have founded an International Section, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. S. Daum from Munich. This section also includes Prof. Dr. Bardfeld, who will coordinate its activities here in Prague, as necessary.

An important part of the Association is the Social Section, which has already been arranging various social events -- concerts, excursions and the like. In addition, it looks after the publication of the Association's newsletter.

The Historical Section, led by Prof. PhDr. Jan Havranek, already has something of a tradition. It organises events relating to the history of Charles University. Now that we are approaching the celebrations of the university's 650th anniversary, the whole Association is directing a large part of its activities towards this goal.

Our hope is that, this year, we will be able to establish new working practices so that, in the jubilee year of 1998, the Association can act as a bond between alumni and their alma mater.

Undoubtedly, many readers will be interested to learn the conditions and circumstances under which they can become members of the Carolinum Association.

The Association of the Alumni and Friends of Charles University was founded on 7 April 1991.

Carolinum is a voluntary, non-political organisation of the alumni of Charles University, without regard to their current country of residence. It is further open to employees of Charles University and to all those who have an interest in the past and present of Charles University, who wish to contribute to its development, or who wish to support its research and teaching activities, without regard to whether they live here or abroad.

Carolinum organises cultural events for its members and informs them, by means of its own publications, about life at Charles University.

The organs of Carolinum are its General Assembly, its Presidium, its Supervisory Board and its Secretary.

The General Assembly meets once a year. All regular and honorary members of the Association are invited to attend. Delegations from affiliated organisations from abroad may also attend in an advisory capacity. The Chair of the Presidium is always the Rector of Charles University.

The Supervisory Board is in particular responsible for the financial affairs of the Association, for the custody of its propety, the maintenance of its accounts and other similar documents, and it reports on these matters to the General Assembly.

The Secretary is in charge of the administrative agenda and represents the Association in outside negotiations. The income of Carolinum arises from enrollment fees, membership fees, gifts, subsidies, bequests, and from profits.

Physical or legal persons become regular members of Carolinum after the payment of an enrollment fee. The Presidium may, in justified cases, nominate honorary members.

The enrollment fee is currently Kc 100 and the annual membership fee Kc 100, or $50 enrollment and $50 annual membership for foreign members.
